Crown and Bridges
A crown is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface to give strength and or aesthetics to the tooth. A bridge is essentially 1 or two crowns connected to or by an artificial tooth to fill the gap of a missing tooth. A crown or bridge protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of dental treatment and can replace a missing tooth. Usually a dental Crown is a built covering that is bonded to a prepared natural tooth to protect it from fracture or for aesthetic reason, sometimes a bridge is attached to one or two crowns to replace a missing tooth or teeth.
You may require a Dental Crown or bridge for teeth with large fillings, broken teeth, to replace missing teeth. We always recommend a crown for teeth that have been root canal treated as this causes structural damage and the tooth to become brittle over time. Fluorosis or teeth with hyper plastic characters may benefit by having dental crowns, you may also have a dental crown placed for aesthetic reasons, to straighten teeth or improve their appearance. Crowns and bridges are often tooth coloured (using porcelain) so they are matched to look as natural as possible next to your own teeth. Metallic crowns are also used in some circumstances, or a mixture of both materials can also be used.
To complete crown or bridge, it usually takes 2-3 visits to your dentist, the preparation appointment normally takes 1 – 2 hours (depending on how many teeth are being crown or bridge prepped). The tooth is prepared by shaping the natural tooth for the crown to be cemented and impressions are taken of the prepared tooth and the opposing teeth, then they are sent to a dental laboratory. The usual fabrication time for a crown can be 10-14 days. Some patients are required to visit the ceramics laboratory in order to have the colour of their natural teeth perfectly matched for optimal aesthetic results.
Temporary crowns are fabricated for the time the crown or bridge is being fabricated at the dental lab. The temporary material we use is not as strong as a natural tooth or a porcelain crown or bridge, so care must be taken to avoid breakage. It is important for brushing and flossing around the temporary crown however, your dentist will show you how to clean if you are unsure. The insert appointment normally takes 30mins per crown or bridge. The crown is tried in and if the dentist and you are happy, it is inserted and cemented permanently.
