Root Canal

A common myth is that Root canal treatment is painful, root canal doesn’t cause pain, it relieves it!

Endodontic treatment (root canal) is a procedure which our dentist in Thomastown can perform to get you out of pain and usually can be completed in two or three appointments.
the reason you may require endodontic treatment could be for many reasons but the most common include:

  • Infection of the tooth
  • Death of the nerve/tooth
  • Pulpitis, inflammation of the nerve

Inside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer called the dentin, is a soft tissue called the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, connective tissue, and helps to grow the root of your tooth during development.

Root canal therapy also known as endodontic treatment is aimed to save and retain teeth. Our dentists will examine the tooth thoroughly for tooth restorability before performing the root canal treatment.

Our dentist in Thomastown will assess the condition of your tooth and your personal circumstances and find the cause of damage to the nerve and whether any other teeth are affected. Some of the reasons you may need a root canal (endodontic treatment) may be because:
You had a deep hole with caries (decay)

  • A deep filling
  • Nerve injury from trauma to your tooth or breakage of your tooth
  • Severe bone loss allowing bacteria to travel to the nerve.

Root canal therapy also known as endodontic treatment is aimed to save your tooth. Our dentist at Thomastown will examine the tooth thoroughly for tooth restorability before performing the root canal treatment and decide if the tooth is worth treating endodontically or whether a different treatment option is more suitable, such as replacement of the tooth.

Root canal treatment is completed over a few stages, the first appointment also known as the emergency stage, the diseased/ infected pulp (nerve) will be removed and medicated to provide pain relief. The second stage is for further cleaning and shaping of the canal to ensure the infection has cleared. During the final visit, the root canal is filled with filling material to enclose the canal permanently.

Because an endodontically treated tooth is weaker, we always recommend having the tooth crowned after the root canal is completed.
Saving the natural tooth with root canal treatment has many advantages:

  • Efficient chewing
  • Normal biting force and sensation
  • Natural appearance
  • Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain
